The dreaded call comes around 3 p.m. You know one: Your partner calls to ask: “Any thoughts about dinner?”

I would like to say that I am one of the people who are planning meals before us (and sincerely praise to you if you are actually one of these people), a quick look at the white board of our fridge reminds me that we have no longer updated the weekly menu.

What can you do if there is two hours until dinner, the child has to be picked up from school activities, and there is more work on the docket? Two words: pasta night. We eat pasta at least once a week because it is super simple and fast and it is a meal that the whole family can agree on. When the 5-year-old is excited to eat in dinner, I am like that.

Although there is an ease to use Jarred sauce, it sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. And sure, I wish I would have thought to found a Bolognese on the stove eight hours earlier, just like Nonna, but this time came and gone.

Fortunately, there are a few tricks with which the glass with sauce bought in the shop tastes a bit closer to real business. At least one of them is probably already in her pantry: dried herbs.

There are a variety of dried herbs that you can choose from your pantry, including basil, parsley and oregano. But my favorite is a mix; Italian spice grabs the greatest blow.

The Italian spice usually includes Basil, Marjoram, Oregano, rosemary and thyme. If you have all these individual dried herbs at hand, you can even make your own mix of scratch.

So add Italian spices to the sauce

The key to get most of the taste of dried herbs is to bloom them in oil before they are added to the sauce. This process helps to extract the aromatic connections from the herbs, which causes more taste.

Since the sauce bought in the store has often contained some dried herbs, they do not have to add so much To improve the taste. Start for a standard glass sauce with half a teaspoon of Italian spice.

To bloom the herbs, heat a small splash of olive oil in a large sauce pot over medium heat, then add the Italian spices and stir fragrant for 15 to 30 seconds. Add the pasta sauce (carefully – as you may split) and simmer the sauce for five to 10 minutes (or longer if you have time). Try the sauce and, if desired, add more Italian spice.
