What is hot cider?
I make this hot cider recipe by gently heating the apple wine on the stove with cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, fresh ginger, maple syrup and orange slices. While it cooks, it manages a cozy, fragrant and aromatic drink that is perfect for these cool autumn or winter days. It is also known as mulled wine or seasoned cider!
Here is what you need to make this homemade hot cider recipe:
- Apple wine: You want to use cider, not normal apple juice or apple cider vinegar (save the latter for my cider shrub -Mocktail recipe!). Apple Cider is quite easy to find in the grocery store in the autumn and winter months. If you have one, the local farmers’ market can also wear freshly squeezed cider. Choose which option best suits your budget.
- Orange: I add orange -colored slices to the apple wine because it cooks to infuse it with a sweet, piquantly orange -colored taste. Use the whole disc, peel and everything!
- Cinnamon sticks & ground nutmeg: ground nutmeg: These are my souvenir spices. If you have whole nutmegs to shave, the taste becomes more pronounced, but I found that the floor was just as good! You could also use ground cinnamon if that’s all you have on hand, but it becomes a key so that you do not end with a delicious hot cider.
- Fresh ginger: I recommend staying with fresh ginger in this recipe, since this medical, powerful kick of the spicy ginger really brings this budget -friendly recipe to the next stage. I also noticed that fresh ginger in the supermarket in the supermarket is much cheaper than usual. It is the ginger harvest season, so it’s probably why.
- Ahorn syrup: Add a delicious sweetness to this recipe. If you do not have maple syrup, you can use brown sugar as a replacement, but this will adjust the taste.
What is the difference between cider and apple juice?
The main difference between the two is that cider is usually not sorted (ie it can be contained in it) and has a cloudier appearance, while apple juice is filtered and clearer. Apple wine can either be pasteurized or not pasteurized, while apple juice is almost always pasteurized and sometimes sugar or preservatives are added. Apple Cider is often only pure pressed apples, which gives it a more natural and slightly tanger taste!
- If you already have a few entire cloves in your pantry, I strongly recommend throwing a few of them. I love the taste you add, but you can be quite expensive, so I left it out of my recipe.
- This recipe is easy to scale for a lot. So buy the gallon cider! I use a large pot when I do this for a group. Everyone can help themselves and add their own garnish at will. You can also taste this as it steeply steep and adapt accordingly over time!
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with various spices and garnishes. Some people like to add a touch of vanilla extract, lemon peel or peppercorns for additional spice. You can also try to mix another fruit juice as we do in our Slow Cooker Spiced Cranberry cider. I occasionally cut up an apple and add it to the pot for additional taste. Have fun with it and make it your own!
- For a drink for adults, add a splash of brandy, bourbon or whiskey to your cup before pouring in the hot cider!
How to save and warm up
This recipe makes 2 portions, so it is unlikely that you will remain a lot – especially if you share it with a friend! However, if you have leftovers or make a large batch, let the tense cider cool completely before keeping it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Pasteurized cider is good for about a week, while not pasturized cider should be consumed within 3 days. I would warm up individual portions in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove.
