Hot butter is the ultimate holiday cocktail to keep it comfortably with a combination of dark rum, warm spices, honey, brown sugar and yes, butter. It is rich, creamy and sipping while she snuggles under a blanket and looks at Hallmark Christmas films.

Buttered rum: a cocktail with an old school with a timeless charm.
Yes, buttered rum is a real drink – and that’s exactly what it says. It is hot, it is made of butter and moved with rum. No false advertising here! This is a cocktail that is perfect for parties, but is also easy enough for yourself just because you earn a pleasure. (Hot butter bourbon is equally delicious.)
If the thought of butter is a little repulsive in a cocktail, think like this: butter is made from cream. So it is really a creamy, delicious, warm preparation that she immediately brings you into the holiday spirit.
The base of Buttered Rum is called dough – it is a mixture of butter, a sweetener (in the case of my recipe, brown sugar and honey) and cozy spices. The dough lasts in the fridge for a few weeks so that you can set up a cup of hot butterrum if you are ashamed. (Or whenever “an unexpected Christmas” plays on the Hallmark channel.)
Key ingredients
You can find the full list of ingredients in the recipe card below, but here are some notes that you should consider.
- Butter rum dough. This begins with soft unsalted butter; To do this, we add brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and only a pinch of salt.
- rum. I use dark rum for this recipe, but spiced rum is also a joy. (Personally, I would not use coconut -rum, but some people like it.)
- Whipped cream. This makes her hot butter rum particularly creamy when he melts. Don’t skip it!
- Optional garnings. Add a cinnamon stick or freshly grated nutmeg if you want.
Smart the hot butter for a crowd
As written, this recipe serves two, but if you serve it for a party, you want to scale it so that you do not puree butter with spices in the kitchen all in the evening. That’s how I would do it:
- Use a full butter stick to make 8 cocktails. (Feel free to scale from there or down.)
- Scaling the rest of the dough ingredients accordingly – see the recipe card notes for precise measurements if you create 8 cocktails.
- Beat the butter with the dough ingredients in a blender or in a bowl with a hand mixer.
- Combine the rum, the boiling water and the dough in a slow stove. Use the Keep -warm backdrop and have your guests served all night over a hot butterrum. Simply set the whipped cream, cinnamon sticks and nutmeg near the crockpot together with cups or heat -resistant glasses.
More cozy Christmas drinks

Prevent your screen from becoming dark
For the cocktails:
- 4 Ounce darker Or spiced rum for an even more stricter drink, divided
- 1 cup hot water
- Whipped cream to serve
- Cinnamon stick Optionally for serving
- Freshly grated nutmeg Optionally for serving
-
Cut the butter, brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt with a spoon in a small bowl. Share the mixture between two serving cups (if you only do 1 drink at the moment, put half in a glass and cool the other half for up to 2 weeks).
-
Add 2 ounces around to each cup.
-
Cook in a kettle or in a heat -resistant fluid meal cup in the microwave. Top every drink with ½ cup of hot water. Stir to combine. (I love my drinks that shout hot, so I can do microwave for about 30 seconds, but you do.)
-
Serve immediately, crowned with whipped cream and garnished with a cinnamon stick and a few bars of fresh nutmeg.
- Make a batch of the dough: You can create a large amount of dough for a party or keep it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Mix the following in a blender:
- 8 tablespoons of butter (1 whole floor)
- 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon of brown sugar
- 1/4 cup of honey
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
- A few pinch of kosher salt
